NONGPOH, March 11: Two separate road accidents in Ri-Bhoi district claimed the lives of a biker and a taxi driver on Tuesday.
In one case, a biker lost his life instantly after being run over by a truck near the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) toll gate at Pahammawlein 20 Mer. According to reports, the accident occurred around 12:30 pm when both vehicles — a bike bearing registration number AS04 Y0825 and a truck with registration number AS01 SC5581 — were heading towards Shillong.
It is reported that just before reaching the NHAI toll gate, the biker attempted to move ahead using the VIP lane. At that moment, the truck, which was also moving forward, collided with the bike and ran over the rider, resulting in his immediate death. Upon receiving information about the incident, Byrnihat police rushed to the scene, took custody of the body, and transported it to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the truck was taken to the Byrnihat police station for further investigation.
In another accident, a passenger taxi with registration number ML06 8101 was involved in a fatal crash on the Umroi bypass near Umdohbyrthih village at around 1 pm. The taxi, reportedly speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road, collided head-on with a truck (ML04 D0386), which was approaching from the opposite direction.
The impact severely damaged the front portion of the taxi, leading to the death of the driver, identified as Twalson Kharbudnah from Umsmu Umsaitsning, Umsning, Ri-Bhoi.
