SHILLONG, April 10: As part of Earth Day celebrations, Team Shubham, under the leadership of Shubham Charitable Association president Pushpa Bajaj, has launched a 10-day Zero Waste Period Awareness Tour from Swer village.
According to a statement here, the campaign seeks to spread the message of the Mission Zero Waste Period to rural communities in the Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block, with a strong emphasis on menstrual hygiene, sustainable living and zero-waste practices.
“At the heart of the campaign is the promotion of reusable sanitary pads—a solution that not only offers a more sustainable and comfortable alternative to single-use pads, but also provides local employment opportunities to rural women. This movement ensures better health outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and a cleaner environment,” the statement said.
The launch event on Thursday saw an encouraging turnout, with 94 participants from neighbouring villages attending the session.
Community interactions were held on a variety of topics, including menstrual hygiene, eco-friendly alternatives, sustainable practices, and women empowerment.
The awareness tour will continue with its next session scheduled in Kongthong village on Friday, where women from Kongthong and nearby areas will be engaged in educational workshops and discussions.
Organised in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Livelihoods Mission (MSLM) and the Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block, the campaign has received special inspiration and support from renowned social and environmental leader, Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim.
The 10-day tour will cover villages across the region and will culminate in Laitkroh on April 23. Sessions will be held daily from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
