SHILLONG, April 16: The Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), in coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Wednesday sounded a series of weather alerts for several districts in the state, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall.
Authorities also urged the public to avoid open spaces, seek proper shelter during lightning strikes, and secure loose outdoor items that could be affected by strong winds or hail. The SDMA has called for heightened vigilance to ensure public safety.
The SDMA had warned that East Garo Hills would witness thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall, with a chance of hail. It advised residents to remain on guard and take appropriate precautions.
In a broader advisory, the IMD has also flagged potential thunderstorms and lightning, coupled with light to moderate showers, across Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, and West Jaintia Hills.
