SHILLONG, April 17: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to ban pornographic websites in order to curb rising crimes against children in the state.
In a petition addressed to the chief minister, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Joplin Scott Shylla expressed concern over the increasing incidents of sexual violence, particularly involving young children, across the state.
“It is a disturbing trend that has shaken the conscience of our society, and we believe urgent intervention is required at the policy level to address one of its root causes,” she said while referring to growing evidence and public concern that easy access to pornographic content online is adversely impacting the minds of impressionable youth, leading to deviant behavior and, tragically, contributing to heinous acts such as rape and sexual assault against minors.
Shylla urged the chief minister to block access to pornography websites within Meghalaya; strengthen cyber surveillance and implement stricter regulations on internet content; collaborate with internet service providers and law enforcement agencies to ensure enforcement of the ban and launch awareness campaigns in schools and communities about digital safety, respect, and the consequences of such criminal actions.
