SHILLONG, April 27: The Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere on Sunday strongly condemned the accident involving its Rangbah Shnong, Dr Aman War, on Friday, calling it a total disregard for pedestrian safety and an instance of reckless driving under the influence by an underage juvenile from Mawbah, identified as Kunal Singh.
In a statement, Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere secretary, Orester Jała Kharbhih, expressed deep concern over the incident involving their Rangbah Shnong. He said such incidents pose a grave threat to public safety and well-being.
“We strongly condemn the behaviour that led to this accident and implore all members of society to recognise the devastating consequences of such actions. Reckless and underage driving, coupled with alcohol consumption while operating a vehicle, endangers lives and disrupts the harmony of our community,” Kharbhih said.
In light of the incident, he urged the authorities to take stringent action to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of all citizens. “We also appeal to the public to exercise responsibility and restraint to ensure our roads are safe for everyone,” he added.
The Dorbar Shnong Lachaumiere further called on the authorities to ensure that driving licences are issued only after proper verification of driving skills, and to strictly enforce regulations against reckless and underage driving.
According to Kharbhih, it is vital to promote road safety measures, raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and reckless driving, and effectively enforce laws prohibiting driving or riding by individuals below 18 years of age and against substance abuse.
It may be recalled that Dr War, who is also a former Director of Health Services (DHS), was injured after being hit by a scooty (registration number ML05 V 8948) while walking near Centenary Junction, opposite the State Central Library, on Friday evening around 7:40 pm.
