7 killed in Pak bomb blast
Peshawar, April 28: At least seven people were killed and nine injured on Monday after a powerful bomb blast ripped through the office of a peace committee in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. The bomb blast occurred at the office of a local peace committee in Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan district, police said. According to hospital administration, 16 injured people were brought to the hospital after the explosion, of which seven succumbed to their injuries. (PTI)
Windows smashed at Pak High Commission in London
London, April 28: An Indian-origin man has been arrested for allegedly smashing the windows of the High Commission of Pakistan in the UK capital, police said on Monday. The incident comes amid tension in India-Pakistan relations following the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. There have been demonstrations over it by the Indian and Pakistani diaspora in London. Ankit Love, 41, was arrested on Sunday and charged with criminal damage, the Metropolitan Police said. (PTI)
Goyal arrives in London
London, April 28: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal arrived in London on Monday morning at the start of a five-day three-city tour, also covering Oslo and Brussels, to drive forward trade and investment dialogues with the UK and Europe. The minister, who is accompanied by a business delegation of leading Indian companies, is expected to hold a series of high-level talks with UK government ministers and officials. During a meeting with his UK counterpart, Jonathan Reynolds, the duo are scheduled to take stock of the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, believed to be approaching their final stages. Vatican City, April 28: Catholic cardinals on Monday set May 7 as the start date for the conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor, delaying the secret voting for two days to help them get to know one another better and find consensus on a candidate before they are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel. The cardinals set the date after arriving for the first day of informal meetings following Pope Francis’ funeral Saturday. In a chaotic scene, journalists shouted out questions to the cardinals about the mood inside, whether there was unity, and when the conclave would begin. (AP)
Major power outage hits Spain, Portugal
Barcelona, April 28: A major power outage hit Spain and Portugal on Monday, including their capitals, knocking out subway networks, phone lines, traffic lights and ATM machines. It is rare to have such a widespread outage there. Spanish generator Red Eléctrica said it affected the Iberian peninsula and the incident is being assessed. The countries have a combined population of more than 50 million people. It was not immediately clear how many were affected. (AP)
