Modi not to attend V-Day celebrations in Moscow
Moscow, April 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day to be held in Moscow next month, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday. “India will not be represented at the highest level”, Peskov said. According to local media reports Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh could represent instead of Modi at the May 9 event. President Vladimir Putin had invited Modi and Xi Jinping of China to attend the V-day celebration here to watch the victory parade at the Red Square. Xi has confirmed that he will attend the event. Preparations are underway to host about 20 foreign leaders in Moscow. (PTI)
3 Indian-origin people found dead after shooting in US
New York, April 30: Three Indian-origin people were found dead after a shooting at a home in the US state of Washington, according to local media reports. The incident took place on April 24 in Newcastle city. The dead were identified as Harshavardhana Kikkeri, 44, Shwetha Panyam, 41, and Dhruva Kikkeri, 14, The Seattle Times newspaper reported on Tuesday. While the deaths of Shwetha and Dhruva were ruled as homicide by the police, Harshavardhana died by suicide, the report quoted the King County medical examiner’s office as saying. Neighbours told the KOMO News that a young family lived in the home where the shooting took place. Unconfirmed reports said Harshavardhana, alongside Shwetha, was the owner of an India-based AI tech company Holoworld. (PTI)
Explosion in China leaves 17 injured
Beijing, April 30: At least 17 people were injured in a residential complex explosion on Wednesday in China’s Shanxi province. Four of the injured are in critical condition and three were discharged after treatment, local authorities said. The blast took place in the Beiying neighbourhood of Xiaodian district in Shanxi’s capital Taiyuan at around 1 pm local time. The fire triggered by the blast has been extinguished, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. No further details were provided. Rescue teams are conducting door-to-door safety checks in the affected building, and an investigation into the cause of the blast is underway. (PTI)
