SHILLONG, May 5: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inspected the ongoing construction of Tura Medical College and expressed satisfaction with its progress.
He stated that efforts are underway to complete the construction and make the medical college operational by the next academic session.
“Close to 80 percent of the civil work has been completed. The progress is satisfactory, and we are optimistic that a major portion of the college infrastructure will be ready within this calendar year,” the chief minister said.
He also informed that the government is closely monitoring the pace of construction to ensure that deadlines are met. “We are making every effort to start the academic session at Tura Medical College as early as possible,” he added.
Additionally, Sangma said the government is exploring partnerships for the management and operation of the college, while emphasising that its ownership will remain with the state.
“Tura Medical College will primarily benefit students from Meghalaya, with a majority of seats reserved for them, thereby improving access to medical education for our youth,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the Tura Medical College is envisioned to enhance medical education in the state and strengthen healthcare services in the Garo Hills region. The government is making significant investments to improve healthcare accessibility in remote areas, upgrade government hospitals, and recruit qualified medical professionals. “Our focus is on building a robust and inclusive healthcare system that ensures quality medical services are available to every citizen, regardless of geography,” the chief minister said.
