SHILLONG, May 7: In a significant advancement for medical imaging and patient care, a state-of-the-art Biplane Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) system and a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) was inaugurated in the Radiology Department of NEIGRIHMS by institute Director Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta on Wednesday.
This cutting-edge technology enhances NEIGRIHMS’ capabilities in diagnosing and treating complex neurological and vascular conditions.
It is only the second Biplane DSA system in the entire Northeast region and is expected to greatly benefit patients in Meghalaya and the neighbouring states.
The newly installed Biplane DSA system provides high-resolution, real-time imaging from two perpendicular angles, allowing for comprehensive visualisation of blood vessels in the brain and other critical areas. This dual-plane imaging significantly improves diagnostic accuracy and enables precise guidance during interventional procedures such as aneurysm coiling, arteriovenous malformation (AVM) treatment, and stroke interventions.
Equipped with advanced features including 3D rotational angiography and needle guidance systems, the Biplane DSA ensures optimal visualization with minimal radiation exposure — leading to improved patient safety and outcomes.
Meanwhile, the integration of the PACS system revolutionises medical image management by digitising and centralising storage, retrieval, and distribution. This allows healthcare professionals to access patient images and reports instantly from any location within the hospital network, enabling faster, more accurate diagnoses and enhancing workflow efficiency by eliminating the need for physical film storage.
Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta said the installation of these advanced systems underscores NEIGRIHMS’ commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services.
“Although the process has been time-consuming and challenging due to our relatively remote location, the installation of the Biplane DSA and PACS systems positions us to provide superior diagnostic and interventional care, ensuring better outcomes for patients undergoing complex procedures,” he said.
Head of the Radiology Department, C Daniala, added, “It has been a long journey to acquire the Biplane DSA and PACS, which were much needed. We have strived to match the standards of leading international hospitals. However, the shortage of highly skilled manpower, particularly neurointerventional radiologists, remains a challenge in Meghalaya — one that we are actively working to address.”
