7th Khelo India Youth Games

Shillong, May 10: In a high-stakes encounter that swung on late drama and raw determination, defending champions Meghalaya stormed into the semifinals of the boys’ football competition at the 7th Khelo India Youth Games with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over West Bengal in Begusarai, Bihar, on Saturday.
Heading into the match, Meghalaya only needed a draw to progress on goal difference, having previously lost to Odisha, who had already secured their semifinal berth. Yet, despite a flurry of early chances — including a saved penalty — the boys in maroon found themselves trailing when Bengal’s Irfan struck with a header in the 61st minute.
Undeterred, Meghalaya launched a spirited second-half fightback, fuelled by composure and a bit of fortune.
A handball in the Bengal box handed Mebanlamlynti Masharing a chance to draw level from the spot, which he coolly slotted home in the 78th minute.
The forward wasn’t done yet — just nine minutes later, he gave Meghalaya the lead with a neat finish off a low cross, turning the match on its head.
Tensions boiled over in the dying moments, with a scuffle breaking out between players from both teams. West Bengal were reduced to nine men following two red cards in the second half, further denting their hopes of a comeback.
With the clock deep into stoppage time — the 100th minute, to be precise — Iaishanbok Buhphang put the result beyond doubt with a sensational free-kick from a tight angle, sealing a memorable 3-1 win.
The spirited victory sees Meghalaya finish second in Group A, booking a spot in the semifinals scheduled for Monday.
Their blend of tenacity, resilience, and clinical finishing when it mattered most will surely make them a team to watch as the competition nears its climax.
