MAWKYRWAT, May 12: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Dangar-Balat Border Circle, has raised serious concern over the mass destruction of fish and other aquatic life in the Umngi River due to the use of poisonous chemicals, nets, and even dynamites by certain exploitative individuals. The Umngi river serves as a natural boundary between the East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts.
President of the HNYF Dangar-Balat Border Circle, Pustarwel Disiar, stated that in response to this illegal activity, the organisation has convened a meeting to be held at IB Dangar on May 15. The meeting is expected to be attended by environmentalists, local anglers, Rangbah Shnongs from both East Khasi Hills (EKH) and South West Khasi Hills (SWKH), and BDOs of Mawsynram and Ranikor. Disiar said the meeting aims to protect fish and other aquatic species in Umngi river — specifically the stretch from Raibah in EKH (opposite Nongnam in SWKH) to Umpung village in SWKH.
