SHILLONG, May 15: Meghalaya has been ranked at the bottom in the Swachh Survekshan report, with an average cleanliness score of 1,364.29, significantly lower than the national average of 4,296.
This latest survey report indicates Meghalaya’s slow progress in improving hygiene and sanitation standards in its urban areas.
The survey, conducted annually, is the world’s largest urban sanitation and cleanliness survey.
Shillong, the capital city, was ranked 436th nationally in the 2023 rankings for cities with populations over 1 lakh. The report revealed that door-to-door waste collection in Shillong was at 26%, and segregation at source was an abysmal 2%.
Cleanliness scores for residential areas, marketplaces, and public toilets were at 54%, 53%, and 33%, respectively.
Other Northeastern states, such as Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur, also fell within the lowest tier. However, smaller cities like Golaghat (Assam), Jiribam (Manipur), Lunglei (Mizoram), and Mohanpur (Tripura) were recognized for high cleanliness.
