SHILLONG, May 19: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to address concerns and upgrade infrastructure to make the Shillong Government College of Engineering fully operational, as mandated by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The Chief Minister gave this assurance during his visit to the college, which recently received AICTE approval to begin undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering starting in the academic year 2025-26.
During the visit, faculty members of Shillong Polytechnic College also apprised the Chief Minister of the need for funding research in the field of Science and Technology. In response, the Chief Minister agreed to their request.
He stated that while the Chief Minister’s Research Fellowship (CMRF) currently supports research in arts and culture, it will now be expanded to include the field of Science and Technology.
The Shillong Government College of Engineering is the first government engineering college in the state. The Letter of Approval (LoA) was issued to the Principal Secretary of Education on April 30. The institute, affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), is located at Mawlai Kynton Massar in the East Khasi Hills district.
The two undergraduate programmes — Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering — will each begin with an initial intake of 30 students for the 2025–26 academic year.
During the visit, the Chief Minister was accompanied by officials from the Education department and Shillong Polytechnic College. He inspected the college building and held consultations with the faculty to understand the institution’s requirements.
