SHILLONG, May 24: As of its campaign to strengthen grassroots-level awareness and citizen participation through information, education and communication activities, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, on Friday held a special awareness programme at Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot.
According to a statement here, the awareness programme was organised under the themes of Swachhata Hi Seva, Poshan Abhiyan and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, with the goal of fostering environmental consciousness, nutritional health and civic responsibility among students and the community.
As part of the programme, an art competition was held on themes of cleanliness, hygiene and nutrition. Similarly, a quiz competition was also organised to test the students’ knowledge on health, environmental care and national campaigns.
“These interactive events encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and active learning. Winners were recognized with certificates and prizes, inspiring others to take part and learn through participation,” the statement said.
During the programme, Dr. L. Jaba, Medical Officer and in-charge of Laitlyngkot PHC, explained the spiritual and environmental essence of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative. “Planting a tree in honour of our mothers is a powerful gesture of love and environmental responsibility,” he said.
Dr. Jaba also spoke on Poshan Abhiyan, whilst emphasising nutrition as the foundation for a healthy and productive life. “Malnutrition is a silent crisis. Let us act together to build a healthier India through proper nutrition and hygiene,” he urged.
He then accentuated the role of children, mothers, teachers and healthcare workers in creating a “well-nourished and healthier India.”
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills District Health and Education Officer, O. Sumer, delivered an informative session on the dietary needs of adolescents.
Drawing focus on enhancing nutrient value through proper cooking, the importance of micronutrients, and prevention of anaemia through regular WIFS (Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation), she said, “Students must learn to enjoy food and understand its value—not just eat to fill hunger.”
Others who spoke on the occasion include Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin, Khatarshnong Block Coordinator, Anie Swer; Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School principal, Longshisha Shabong; CBC Shillong Assistant Director, Gopajit Das, et al.
“The programme concluded with a pledge by all participants to uphold cleanliness, promote good health, protect nature, and contribute to building a better India,” the statement said.
