Meghalaya preps Umiam for 2027 National Games water sports

Shillong, May 25: The competitive spirit of Indian sailing took centre stage at the crystal-clear waters of Umiam Lake as the 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 officially began, drawing some of the country’s brightest young sailing talents to Meghalaya.
With over 79 sailors from nine top sailing clubs nationwide—including 25 female participants and nine promising novices—the regatta has set the tone for a week of high-octane racing that could shape the future of India’s national sailing squad.
Hosted by the Umiam Sailing Club in partnership with UDAY Sailing Foundation, and backed by the Yachting Association of India (YAI) and the International 420 Class Association of India, the event is a key fixture in the Junior National Ranking Regatta calendar. Performances here are critical for selections ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, making the stakes sky-high.
“The effort to build a professional and sailor-friendly atmosphere here has raised the benchmark for regional sailing events across India,” said Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM, Vice President of YAI and Chief Guest at the event. He lauded the Umiam Sailing Club for fielding 13 sailors—making it the third-largest contingent this year—and acknowledged the growing sailing culture in Northeast India.
The regatta, which continues till May 29, features five racing categories across 11 classes, and will be governed by a team of international judges, certified race officers, and a national measurer, ensuring the highest level of competition standards.
In a nod to the broader vision for the region, Dr Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Tourism, and Chairman of Umiam Sailing Club, highlighted plans to transform Umiam Lake into a permanent hub for both recreational and competitive water sports. “With Meghalaya set to host the National Games in 2027, Umiam will be a crucial venue for rowing and sailing,” he said, adding that a dedicated water sports zone has already been earmarked.
Against the scenic backdrop of pine-laced hills and calm waters, the regatta is not only a showcase of athleticism but also a step forward in Meghalaya’s growing reputation as a destination for sport, tourism, and youth development.
With wind in their sails and dreams in their eyes, the young competitors are not just racing for podium finishes—but for a place in India’s future in international sailing.
