TURA, May 27: Garo Students’ Union ( GSU) Eastern Zone, Williamnagar, has sought Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s urgent attention to issues pertaining to developmental delays, both in the field of education as well infrastructural development in Williamnagar, in particuar, and East Garo Hills district, in general.
In a memorandum to the CM, the GSU highlighted the educational crisis due to shortage of seats for students pursuing higher education and long pending educational projects in the district.
Concerns in education sector raised by the GSU include pending Williamnagar Government Higher Secondary School building; delay in introducing Commerce stream, depriving students of academic options; continued non-functioning of Williamnagar Polytechnic Institute, even after its inauguration in 2018; stalled DIET Centre despite land acquisition and incomplete repair works of LP schools sanctioned under MIDFC, causing hardships to students in rural areas.
In a separate memorandum, the Union sought the CM’s intervention in expediting long pending infrastructural projects.
Their concerns include the delayed construction of a bridge over Dama stream at Williamnagar Bus Station.
It also called out the slow pace of urban road rehabilitation works under the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) being implemented by ATW India Pvt. Ltd, which it said, is causing massive disruptions to daily life and raising serious questions about project management and accountability.
Invoking legal provisions like the Indian Contract Act, General Financial Rules and PWD norms, the GSU demanded that Government take strict action against delays and non-performance by contractors and ensure quality, timely completion of works.
Stating that Williamnagar deserves better infrastructure and functioning educational institutions, it said delays and negligence cannot be tolerated any longer and urged the government to act decisively.
