SHILLONG, May 28: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for nurses in Meghalaya, ensuring their voices are heard at the highest levels of policymaking.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the XV Biennial State SNAI Conference 2025, organised by the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Meghalaya State Branch, on Wednesday, Syngkon emphasised the need to address the pressing challenges faced by the nursing community.
He stated that the hardships endured by nurses are not merely professional concerns but critical issues of public interest and national health.
“Nurses play one of the most vital roles in our healthcare system. It is my priority to ensure their challenges are brought to light and addressed across institutions in the state,” Syngkon said.
Highlighting his ongoing efforts in Parliament, he added, “Within the scope of my responsibilities, I have consistently raised issues affecting the nursing community — both on the floor of the House and through various parliamentary mechanisms.”
He noted that he has written numerous letters and submitted formal representations to the relevant Union ministries.
Syngkon underscored the need for improved working conditions, fair recruitment policies, pay parity, timely remuneration, clearer career advancement pathways, and comprehensive welfare support for nurses. “These efforts are not merely administrative,” he said, adding that they stem from deep respect for the healthcare system and a strong sense of responsibility to ensure nurses’ service is recognised, supported, and sustained.
Syngkon also acknowledged the indispensable role of nurses as the backbone of healthcare and praised the value of conferences like this in empowering the nursing community through knowledge-sharing and collaboration. “Nurses are present at every level of the healthcare system,” he observed.
Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, the MP lauded the courage, professionalism, and resilience demonstrated by nurses, saying their contributions during that crisis were beyond words.
Also speaking at the event, Director of NEIGRIHMS Prof Nalin Mehta described the gathering as a celebration of dedication, compassion, continuous learning, and leadership in nursing. “Nursing is the heart and spine of the healthcare delivery system,” he said.
The two-day conference is being held at the Lariti International Performing Arts and Culture Centre in Mawkasiang under the theme: “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow: A Journey of a Nursing Student.”
