Tamanna, Priya, and Deepak enter semis of Thailand boxing
BANGKOK, May 28: Indian pugilists continued their strong showing at the fourth Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament, with Tamanna, Priya and Deepak assuring themselves of at least bronze medals by entering the semifinals here on Wednesday.In the women’s 51kg category, Tamanna put in a composed performance to beat Liu Yu-Shan of Chinese Taipei by unanimous decision.Priya (57kg) followed it up with a confident 5-0 win over South Korea’s Park Ah-hyun, controlling the bout from start to finish.In the men’s draw, Deepak (75kg) showed technical clarity and ring discipline to defeat South Korea’s Kim Hyeon-tae, also by a unanimous verdict.India fielded a 19-member strong contingent in the prestigious boxing tournament, held under the aegis of World Boxing-backed Asian Boxing, that has attracted talented boxers from powerhouses like China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea, and host Thailand.Jugnoo (85kg) and Anjali (75kg) ended their campaigns with reverses in their respective quarterfinal bouts. Ahmedabad to host Asian Weightlifting C’ships in 2026
NEW DELHI, May 28: The 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships will be held in Ahmedabad from April 1 to 10, the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) confirmed on Wednesday.India was awarded the hosting rights last year by the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) during its annual Congress.This will be the first edition of the Asian Championships to be conducted under the International Weightlifting Federation’s revised weight categories.Originally scheduled to take place in Gandhinagar, the event was later shifted to Ahmedabad. This marks the city’s second major international weightlifting event, with the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships also set to take place in August.The Gujarat government is already developing sports infrastructure in Ahmedabad with an eye on the 2036 Olympics.India has also formally submitted its bid to conduct the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. India beat Argentina on penalties in Jr women’s hockey
ROSARIO, (Argentina) May 28: Goalkeeper and captain Nidhi pulled off four consecutive saves as India edged past hosts Argentina 2-0 on shootout following a 1-1 deadlock in the Four Nations junior women’s hockey tournament here.Kanika (44’) scored India’s lone goal during regulation time, while Lalrinpuii and Lalthantluangi netted in the shootout to secure the victory in their third match of the tournament.Argentina got off to a strong start, with Milagros Del Valle (10’) giving the home side the lead in the first quarter before India responded in the third quarter through Kanika’s strike.With no further goals, the match stayed tied and went into the penalty shootout.India will take on Chile in their next fixture on Friday. Vani looks at four-in-a-row feat at seventh leg of WPGT
MYSORE, May 28: Vani Kapoor, one of India’s most experienced players, will aim to win her fourth title of the season when she tees off at the seventh leg of the Women’s Pro Golf Tour, here.Vani won three times in a row before the Tour took a pause in late March.The Tour now resumes at Mysuru with the seventh leg.Vani has been most prolific this season. In five events, she has won three times in the fourth, fifth and sixth legs and was runner-up in the second and the third.She did not play at the opening event, which means she has been in the Top-2 in each of the five starts she has had. Vani is now looking at a four-in-a-row feat at Mysuru.Sneha Singh, who has won twice is not playing this week but Rhea Purvi Saravanan, who won the season opener, will be back in action. Only three players have won this season.Vani, Amandeep and Ridhima are also hoping to prepare themselves ahead of possible starts on the Ladies European Tour and later the Women’s Indian Open in the second half of the season.A total of 27 players including two amateurs are in the field this week for the event that carries a purse of Rs.14 lakhs.
