SHILLONG, May 30: A day after a 24-year-old man from Jorhat, Assam, was arrested by the East Khasi Hills Police on the charges of sexual assault of two schoolgirls here, the Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students’ Association (SSASA) has strongly condemned the incident, expressing shock and outrage over the crime.
In a statement issued, the association described the incident as “shameful and criminal behaviour” and asserted that such acts have no place in any civilised society.
“The alleged actions of the individual do not represent the values, culture, or upbringing of the Assamese community, and we stand in full solidarity with the victims and their families,” the association said.
“We urge the authorities to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and firmly. SSASA remains committed to promoting harmony, respect, and responsible citizenship among students and the larger society,” it added.
It may be mentioned that the accused, identified as Himan Gogoi, was arrested following allegations of sexually assaulting two minor girls in Umsohsun and Police Bazar areas on two different occasions.
