SHILLONG, June 11: A 16-year-old girl battling a severe spinal deformity has been given a new lease on life after undergoing a complex corrective surgery at NEIGRIHMS, marking a rare and commendable feat in public sector healthcare in the Northeast.
The teenager, who had been living with advanced scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves abnormally, underwent a high-risk spinal correction surgery at the Orthopaedics Department of NEIGRIHMS.
The procedure was led by Dr Sachlang Debbarma (Associate Professor) with Dr Tashi G Khonglah (Additional Professor) and Dr Penthungo Ezung (Senior Resident) forming the core surgical team, under the direction of Prof (Dr) Sharat Agarwal and Prof (Dr) Bhaskar Borgohain, Heads of the Department.
To ensure accuracy and protect the spinal cord, the operation incorporated advanced intra-operative neuro-monitoring, supervised by Dr John Lyngdoh from the Department of Physiology. The Department of Anaesthesiology, under Dr Rajani Thabah, maintained critical stability during the hours-long procedure. Supporting the operation from start to finish was a highly coordinated team of nurses and OT staff, with Sister Watila Chungmeri leading the nursing wing.
Hospital officials confirmed that the patient is recovering well, with regular physiotherapy and medical oversight helping her regain strength. Her condition is stable, and doctors are optimistic about her long-term prognosis.
“This is one of the first such scoliosis surgeries performed in a government institute in the Northeast,” said Dr Debbarma. He explained that scoliosis, if neglected, can lead to chronic pain, lung complications, and poor quality of life. “Early detection and timely surgical intervention are vital for improving outcomes,” he stressed.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta lauded the collaborative effort, calling it a milestone in specialised spine care for the region. “This achievement highlights our growing expertise in managing complex spinal conditions using cutting-edge technology and multidisciplinary teamwork,” he said.
As the young patient begins her journey from spinal curvature to a confident recovery, NEIGRIHMS has not only restored her posture but also reaffirmed its place as a centre of advanced medical care in Northeast India.
