SHILLONG, June 18: Raising alarm over alleged malpractices in recent government recruitment exams, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) Shillong Circle and Central Body has urged the state government to enforce a temporary internet shutdown during examination hours to ensure fairness and integrity in the process.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, the JSU highlighted complaints from the public about candidates using mobile phones and online tools to cheat in certain exam centres.
The JSU argued that with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, such technologies are increasingly being misused to gain unfair advantages.
It also maintained that shutting down internet access during exam hours could potentially reduce such malpractices by up to 60 percent.
The JSU also contended that in today’s digital age, AI tools that are capable of solving complex queries with ease can be exploited by aspirants using smartphones, smartwatches or other concealed devices.
Calling for stricter frisking protocols at exam centres, the JSU recommended thorough searches both at entry points and within the examination halls.
The union further demanded the installation of CCTV cameras across all exam venues and during interview rounds, arguing that constant surveillance would act as a deterrent and ensure transparency and accountability throughout the recruitment process.
The JSU said it believes that the implementation of these measures will not only uphold the fairness of recruitment exams but also restore faith among genuine candidates and the general public in the state’s hiring systems.
