Nongpoh, June 19: In a proud moment for Meghalaya’s growing martial arts community, five young Muaythai athletes from the state are set to represent India at the prestigious Asian Muaythai Championship 2025, to be held in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam, from June 20 to 26.
The fighters—Bansahnamkyrpang Warkhyllew (45kg, Nongkrem), Aristone Syiemsad (57kg, Mawdiangdiang), Teiboklang Marbaniang (51kg, Mylliem), Mary Christine Riang (45kg, Umsaitsning), and Anita Rai (48kg, Nongpoh)—will compete under the banner of the United Muaythai Association of India (UMAI), showcasing their talent on one of Asia’s biggest combat sports stages.
Ahead of their departure, Angelus Sun, President of the Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya (MTAM), extended his best wishes to the contingent and praised their dedication and resilience.
In a show of both admiration and concern, he acknowledged the sacrifices made by the athletes’ families—who have self-financed the trip, reportedly contributing ₹1.25 lakh per athlete from their own savings.
Sun appealed to the Meghalaya government for support, expressing hope that state authorities would assist these athletes financially, as they have done for other sportspersons in previous international outings. He also lauded Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) for their ongoing efforts to uplift Muaythai and provide platforms for athletes to compete and grow.
“Meghalaya is steadily making its mark in the martial arts world,” said Sun. “These five fighters carry the spirit and strength of our state. We believe they will make us proud in Vietnam.”
With the backing of their families, coaches, and a passionate local sports community, Meghalaya’s Muaythai warriors now stand ready to fight for glory—not just for themselves, but for the state and the nation.
