SHILLONG, June 21: A month-long celebration to commemorate National Reading Day commenced at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Umroi Cantonment on June 19 under the theme ‘Read and Grow’.
According to a statement here, the programme, organised under the guidance of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Silchar Region, will continue until July 18, and features a series of literary activities designed to cultivate a culture of reading among students.
The celebration began with a reading pledge led by Swastika, a student of Class X, who encouraged her peers to make reading a daily habit and expand their knowledge through books.
The event was coordinated by Librarian Krishna Nand Singh, who elaborated on the significance of National Reading Day and introduced a line-up of upcoming activities. These include storytelling sessions, library quizzes, book jacket design, bookmark making, essay writing, and poster competitions—all centered around the value of reading.
Adding a special touch to the occasion, a banner featuring PN Panicker, the father of the Library and Reading Movement in India, was unveiled. The school premises were also adorned with motivational quotes from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
In his address, the school principal applauded the enthusiasm of students and stressed the vital role of reading and libraries in shaping imaginative, informed and responsible citizens.
“The program marked a vibrant start to the Reading Month, with active participation from students and staff, setting the stage for a rich celebration of books and learning,” the statement said.
