West Garo Hills matricide case
TURA, June 29: Various organisations from Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills (WGH) have written to the Superintendent of Police, seeking the immediate transfer of the Officer-in-Charge of the Tikrikilla police station, citing neglect of duty in connection with the recent sensational murder case of a man allegedly killed by his wife, her lover and her brothers.
The complainant organisations include the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), A’chik Dedicated Integrity Leaders (ADIL), Federation of A’chik Freedom (FAF), Achik State People’s Front (ASPF) and the Save B-Mahal Committee.
According to the organisations, the gruesome murder in Rengegre village under the Raksamgre Civil Sub-Division has shocked the region, where Pirot R. Marak was allegedly killed on April 14 by his wife Nennen Marak, along with her lover Reknan K. Sangma, and her two brothers Lepson Marak and Sengba Marak.
“The case came to light after Pirot’s family filed a complaint on May 7 and authorities exhumed the body on June 12. While the family filed a complaint on May 7, the body was only exhumed over a month later, which is unacceptable and clearly shows negligence in their duties,” stated the organisations in their complaint.
They added that the delay in exhumation has damaged public confidence in the police and eroded trust.
“We have learned from reliable sources that the IO or OC of Tikrikilla P.S. has sent the CD directly to the Chief Judicial Magistrate without informing the concerned executive authority. However, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Tura has ordered and returned the CD to the concerned executive authority, i.e., the SDO of Raksamgre Civil Division. The exhumation of a body is not a judicial function; it is a duty of the concerned executive authority. Therefore, we, on behalf of the community in general, are getting into hot water over the delay of interrogation and despise his unprofessional behaviour,” they asserted.
The groups felt that delays in conducting interrogations could have hazardous consequences when split-second decisions are crucial. “Failure to follow procedure or negligence of duty will affect the justice system’s integrity. We therefore seek his immediate transfer from Tikrikilla PS,” they added.
