NONGPOH, July 5: The Syngkli clan of Umdihar has decided to excommunicate one of its members, Mebanker Syngkli, temporarily following his alleged involvement in criminal activities that, according to the clan, had brought disrepute.
In a general meeting held on Friday evening, the clan unanimously resolved to take disciplinary action against Mebanker.
Speaking to media persons, president of the Kur Syngkli, Umdihar, FA Syngkli, expressed deep sorrow and disappointment over the matter.
He said that the clan was disheartened to learn that one of its members was allegedly involved in multiple criminal acts, leading to his recent detention by the Pahamsyiem village authorities.
FA Syngkli informed that the clan’s executive committee had convened on July 1 to deliberate on the issue, and, after careful consideration, resolved to temporarily sever ties with Mebanker.
The decision was later ratified during the general meeting at the Umdihar Village Community Hall on July 4.
It may be recalled that Mebanker Syngkli was apprehended by the Pahamsyiem village authorities for allegedly extorting money from local shops under the guise of representing the Ri-Bhoi People Movement. He was also accused of involvement in a theft at the Umdihar Presbyterian Church last year, along with other alleged unlawful activities.
Clarifying the nature of the decision, FA Syngkli emphasised that the clan’s disassociation from Mebanker is temporary and intended as a corrective measure, stating that the decision is not permanent and that the clan remains open to reconsidering its stance should Mebanker demonstrate genuine signs of reformation in the future.
The Syngkli Clan president also expressed gratitude to the Dorbar Shnong of Umdihar and the Seng Samla Umdihar for their continued support in easing the clan’s burden and extended an apology to the Dorbar Shnong of Pahamsyiem, the Presbyterian Church of Umdihar and others affected by Mebanker Syngkli’s alleged actions.
