SHILLONG, July 6: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) has expressed concern over the dismal condition of government healthcare facilities in the state.
MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla highlighted the lack of doctors, specialists, inadequate infrastructure, shortage of medicines, and poorly equipped hospitals, particularly in rural and remote areas.
This has led to many families seeking expensive private treatment in other states, pushing them deeper into poverty, she said.
Shylla urged the state government to strengthen primary health centres (PHCs) and upgrade district hospitals with better infrastructure, advanced medical equipment, and specialist services.
She also called for the recruitment of more healthcare workers, especially in rural areas, and the effective implementation of health insurance schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Megha Health Insurance Scheme.
Shylla also spoke about the need to improve maternal and child health services, especially in hard-to-reach areas, through mobile health units and outreach programmes.
She suggested the creation of a state healthcare taskforce to regularly audit public hospitals, monitor care quality, and receive public grievances on healthcare issues.
