SHILLONG, July 10: A Special POCSO Court in East Khasi Hills on Thursday convicted three individuals—Raj Roy, Ashit Chanda, and Prasenjit Das—for multiple offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The judgment, delivered by Special Judge (POCSO) MK Lyngdoh sentenced each of the accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
At the same time, the convicts were also sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with fine of Rs 10,000 for offence punishable under Section 12 of POCSO Act.
Additionally, the convicts were also sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment with fine of 20,000 for an offence punishable under Section 17 of POCSO Act.
Further, the convicts were also sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with fine of Rs 10,000 for an offence punishable under Section 506 Para I of IPC.
The court ordered that all the sentences will run concurrently. Furthermore, the court recommended a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to be paid to the survivor by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, Shillong.
The case dates back to 2013, when the survivor was 16 years old. The convicts had committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on the minor on multiple occasions.
The FIR against the three accused was filed by the father of the victim at Sadar police station.
The case was prosecuted by Special Public Prosecutor Eva Rynjah, and the investigation was led by WPSI MM Momin.
