Dhaka, July 14: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced the formation of an investigation committee to probe the brutal murder of a scrap trader, Sohag, in Old Dhaka on July 9. The incident, which occurred in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, involved Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, a leader of BNP’s youth wing Jubo Dal, and several others who allegedly stripped and beat Sohag to death after demanding extortion money. A disturbing video of the killing went viral on social media, triggering nationwide outrage.
In response to allegations implicating its members, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed the murder was politically motivated and intended to destabilize the country ahead of upcoming national elections. The party contends that the incident is being used to serve “evil political agendas” and has established a fact-finding committee to uncover the truth.
The ruling Awami League has strongly condemned the killing, calling it “grotesque and barbaric,” and attributing it to activists from Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal. The party criticized the current interim government under Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of fostering a culture of impunity, undermining rule of law, and enabling violence against its supporters, journalists, minorities, and law enforcement personnel since taking power in August 2024.(IANS)
