Elder shot dead in restive Pakistan
PESHAWAR, July 14: A tribal elder and his driver were killed by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The tribal leader, Malik Muhammad Rehman Dawar, had survived two previous attempts on his life. The incident occurred in the Tapi area of the North Waziristan district, along the Miranshah-Bannu Road. The attackers opened fire, killing Dawar and his driver on the spot. Authorities are investigating multiple angles and are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. Pro-government tribal elders, who support security forces against terrorists along the Pak-Afghan border, are frequently targeted by terrorists in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. (PTI)
Plane crash near London kills four
LONDON, July 14: Police say four people died aboard a small plane that crashed shortly after taking off from London Southend Airport on Sunday. Essex Police said Monday that work is continuing to identify the victims, none of whom are British. The Beechcraft B200 Super King Air operated by Dutch firm Zeusch Aviation had flown from Athens, Greece to Pula in Croatia on Sunday before heading to Southend. It was due to return to its home base of Lelystad, in the Netherlands, on Sunday evening. The 23-metre turboprop plane came down moments after takeoff and burst into flames. Zeusch Aviation operates medical evacuation and transplant flights as well as aerial mapping and private charters, according to its website. (PTI)
Indian origin woman dies in apartment fire in UAE
DUBAI, July 14: A 46-year-old Indian woman was killed in a fire in her apartment in Sharjah, UAE, while performing a special ritual. The fire started late on Thursday and damaged the woman’s flat before it was contained. Civil Defence teams and police responded, and the woman’s body was sent for an autopsy. Police are investigating the cause of the fire and any safety violations. In a separate incident, a 20-year-old Indian woman allegedly killed her infant before taking her own life. The woman was responsible for the death of her over one-year-old child, with clear marks on her neck indicating suicide. The woman’s body was transferred to the hospital and forensic laboratory for an autopsy. (PTI)
Fire kills 9 at MA assisted living home
Fall River (US), July 14: Nine people have died in a fire at an assisted living facility in Massachusetts, where people were hanging out of windows screaming for help, authorities said Monday. Firefighters responded to the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River at about 9:50 pm Sunday and were met with heavy smoke and flames at the front of the building, with occupants trapped inside, the state Department of Fire Services said in a news release. About 70 people live in the house. The fire was out by Monday morning and firefighters were able to get inside and rescue numerous occupants. About 50 firefighters responded, including 30 who were off-duty. (AP)
