SHILLONG, July 19: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah on Saturday prohibited the movement of heavily loaded vehicles weighing over nine tonnes on Bridge No. 1/1 along the Nongspung-Laitmawsiang Road with immediate effect, citing public safety concerns.
The order, which will remain in force indefinitely, stated that the bridge, already frail due to the plying of heavy vehicles, has a load capacity of only nine tonnes.
The DC said that the ongoing renovation of the deck slab is also under way, and allowing overloaded vehicles to pass could cause further damage, endangering the safety of the public and villagers in the area.
In this regard, the DC has enforced the curb while warning action against the violators.
