SHILLONG, July 21: C&RD Minister Abu Taher Mondal has directed officials to verify whether the revised minimum wages are being implemented across all 56 C&RD Blocks in the state.
This directive comes in the wake of the disruption of the inauguration ceremony of the permanent office building of the Mawpat C&RD Block. Residents of Mawpat village staged a protest, demanding that the government fulfill the terms of a 2017 agreement. A key demand is the implementation of the revised minimum wages for Grade IV employees of the block.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mondal said the department has already conducted an audit on the implementation of minimum wages, but now plans to re-examine whether any C&RD Block is yet to comply with the new wage norms.
He further informed that a meeting will soon be convened with other concerned departments to address the issue of non-implementation of minimum wages.
Mondal acknowledged that the demand raised by the Mawpat Dorbar Shnong for fair wages for casual employees is legitimate. He also invited representatives of the village to meet him directly to discuss their grievances, provided they schedule an appointment.
When asked about the possibility of new blocks being created, the Minister said there are no current proposals. However, he added that the government regularly assesses the need for additional blocks based on factors such as population and accessibility.
Of the 59 C&RD Blocks in Meghalaya, nine were established during the previous term. The newest, the Mawhati C&RD Block, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in January this year.
