SHILLONG, July 21: Two individuals have been convicted in East Jaintia Hills for offences committed against minors in separate cases.
In the first case, the accused, Shambhu Ray, was found guilty under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act in connection with Khliehriat Police Station case (No. 27(04)2023). The case was investigated by SI DD Warjri, and the charge sheet was submitted on July 11, 2023. Special Judge (POCSO) B Khriam sentenced Ray to 7 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000. The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to be paid to the minor survivor.
In a separate case, Peitlang Bamon was convicted under Sections 8 and 12 of the POCSO Act in connection with Khliehriat Women PS case. WP-Inspector O Tyngkan led the investigation, and the charge sheet was filed on October 6, 2021. Bamon was sentenced to four years of imprisonment under Section 8 and three years under Section 12, along with fines of Rs 20,000 for each section. In case of default in payment, he will serve an additional one-month simple imprisonment. This survivor would be paid Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation.
