City college recalls Rev Dr John Roberts’ contributions

SHILLONG, July 25: John Roberts Theological College, Shillong, on July 23, organised the Annual Memorial Lecture to commemorate the death anniversary and recapture the contributions of Rev Dr John Roberts — the Father of Khasi Literature and the founding Principal of Cherra Theological College, now known as John Roberts Theological College.
The programme commenced with a wreath laying ceremony.
President of the Governing Board of the college, Rev GPL Gadew, chaired the ceremony and provided a brief introduction to the legacy of John Roberts. The second session — the John Roberts Annual Memorial Lecture — was chaired by Rev Dr BL Nongbri, Principal of the College, and Dr Madeline Yvonne Tham, Convenor, INTACH, Meghalaya Chapter, graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered a Lecture on ‘European Writings on the Khasis (Pre-Independence).’
The speaker highlighted the excerpts of missionary writings on the Khasis and their encounter with the socio-cultural life of the people in the region.
