WILLIAMNAGAR, July 26: East Garo Hills (EGH) police have issued a warning to residents against harbouring the accused of the brutal murder of a 19-year-old student in Williamnagar.
In a notice issued yesterday, the Office of the East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police stated that it had come to their knowledge that certain individuals were sheltering and concealing the whereabouts of the wanted accused, James R. Sangma.
He is sought in connection with the gruesome murder that took place at Samgong, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, on July 18.
The notice further reiterated that anyone who has knowledge of, or reason to believe, that they are shielding the accused with the intent of protecting him from legal consequences should be aware that “harbouring and concealing a wanted accused person tantamounts to a criminal offence under Section 249 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, punishable with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend up to five years.”
The statement also urged that if anyone has information about the accused’s location or is knowingly harbouring him, such details must be immediately reported to the SP’s office or to the nearest Police Station, Outpost, Police Unit, or a police officer without delay.
The accused, Sangma, is also wanted in a separate POCSO case and was out on bail when he allegedly hacked the 19-year-old victim in broad daylight before fleeing. His current whereabouts remain unknown.
