Man sentenced to 20 years in jail for incest

SHILLONG, Aug 11: The Special POCSO Court in East Khasi Hills on Monday sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 for an offence under Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
In default of payment of fine, the convict will undergo additional four months of imprisonment.
The court also awarded seven years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 for an offence punishable under Section 10 of POCSO Act and in default of payment of fine, announced further imprisonment for three months.
Additionally, the convict was also sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with fine of 5,000 for an offence under Section 506 Para I IPC and in default of payment of fine, further imprisonment for two months.
According to the court, all the sentences will run concurrently.
The man was convicted for sexual assault on his daughter on July 20, 2013.
The prosecution was conducted by Special Public Prosecutor Eva Rynjah and while the investigation was led by WPSI B Syiem.
Special Judge (POCSO) MK Lyngdoh recommended payment of Rs 3 lakh to the minor survivor by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, Shillong.
“In this instant case, the survivor was about 15 years 4 months and 9 days old when the offence was committed. The offence has been committed on her by her father and she is traumatised after the incident. The survivor has to be rehabilitated,” the court added.
