Man jumps off Byrnihat bridge into river over altercation

NONGPOH, Aug 13: A 27-year-old man reportedly jumped off the Byrnihat bridge into the Umtrew River on Tuesday morning following a dispute over the sharing of money obtained from the alleged sale of a stolen mobile phone.
The incident occurred at around 9 am and involved Wanphrangsngi Syiemlieh of Nongkyndang, Saiden. According to sources, Syiemlieh, along with a group of friends allegedly involved in drug use, had stolen and sold a mobile phone. Disagreements reportedly arose over the distribution of the proceeds, leading to a heated altercation.
During the confrontation, the friends allegedly threatened to assault Syiemlieh. In a bid to escape, he ran towards the Byrnihat bridge and leapt directly into the Umtrew River.
Personnel from the Search and Rescue Team, the Fire and Emergency Services, and Byrnihat Police Station have launched a search operation to trace Syiemlieh.
