SHILLONG, Aug 16: From bandhs to lively celebrations, Shillong has come a long way in marking Independence Day. In earlier years, both Independence Day and Republic Day were often observed in the city with deserted streets and shuttered shops.
Over the past eight to nine years, however, the celebrations have grown significantly, with crowds pouring onto the streets in a festive spirit— a sharp contrast to the bandh-hit days of the past. This year, a huge turnout was witnessed across the city as people came out with friends and families, creating a carnival-like atmosphere. At Police Bazar, a massive crowd gathered to enjoy the decorations and live musical performances, while places like Ward’s Lake and Lady Hydari Park buzzed with activity, hosting cultural and musical programmes.
An elderly resident, recalling past celebrations, said, “Today I felt like I was reliving my childhood, when Independence Day was celebrated in a similar way.” He remembered a time when Shillong would come to a complete standstill on Independence Day, but expressed happiness at the positive change.
A young local also shared, “Growing up in Shillong, I saw years when the streets remained deserted during Independence Day. Now, things have completely turned around, and the day is celebrated in the most spirited manner.”
In recent years, localities across the city have begun celebrating Independence Day at the community level, with the Tricolour proudly unfurled. Similarly, schools across Shillong now organise programmes to mark the occasion, with enthusiastic participation from students.
