Over 400 athletes to compete in Khelo India Water Sports

SRINAGAR, Aug 18: Jammu and Kashmir’s quest to emerge as a sporting destination will get a major boost when the Dal Lake hosts the maiden Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) in six disciplines from August 21-23.More than 400 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories will participate in three medal events — rowing, kayaking and canoeing — as the sports ministry plans to further promote sports activities in the valley, following Gulmarg’s success in hosting five editions of the Khelo India Winter Games.For decades, Dal Lake has remained the hub of Kashmir tourism, and with the hosting of the inaugural KIWSF, it will also become a hot spot for competitive sporting activity.(PTI)

Jr hockey: Odisha, Manipur, and MP progress to QFs

JALANDHAR, Aug 18: Odisha, Manipur and Jharkhand emerged winners against their respective rivals to progress to the quarterfinals in Division ‘A’ of the 15th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship, here on Monday.Madhya Pradesh, who played out a 3-3 draw against Tamil Nadu to end the pool stage, also progressed to the quarterfinals by virtue of a better overall goal difference.Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Haryana, Manipur, Odisha and Karnataka are the eight teams to have made it to the quarterfinals.Odisha thrashed Andhra Pradesh 10-0, while Manipur defeated Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Hockey 5-1 in Pool C to claim three points. In a Pool B contest, Jharkhand beat Maharashtra 5-3.The quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday. (PTI)

Chess: Kriti, Iyer and Muthe continue winning streak

MUMBAI, Aug 18: WCM Kriti Patel, ACM Arvind Iyer and Dhruv Muthe continued their respective winning streaks in the third round of the All India Chess Masters Mumbai FIDE Classical Tournament here on Monday.Playing with black pieces, Kriti got the better of Anvay Patil while Iyer defeated Mediansh Poojary to record his third successive victory.Muthe also registered his third straight win as he defeated Murli R and remained on the top position in the standings.Results top-10 round 3: Aditya Kumar 2 lost to IM Aaryan Varshney 3; Mediansh Poojary lost to ACM Arvind Iyer 3; Om Gada 3 beat Vinod Chatruvedi 2; Shorya Lakshayjeet 2 lost to AFM Sahil Chogle 3; Samvid Pasbola 2 lost to Vedant Gogri 3; Aryan Kumar 2.5 drew with Apurv Deshmukh 2.5; Anvay Patil 2 lost to WCM Kirti Patel 3; Murli R. 2 lost to Dhruv Muthe 3; Amit Naik 3 beat Manya Balani 2; Reya Banker 3 beat Tvesha Jain 2.
