WASHINGTON, Aug 18: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, joined by a powerful delegation of European leaders, met US President Donald Trump at the White House in a critical effort to shape the future of Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
The meeting aimed to present a united Western front and secure strong security guarantees for Ukraine.
European leaders—including the heads of the European Commission, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Finland, and NATO—attended the summit after being excluded from Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Their coordinated presence in Washington was a rare display of diplomatic solidarity, reflecting a shared goal: ensuring lasting peace while safeguarding Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The summit follows a history of tense exchanges between Trump and Zelenskyy, including a contentious Oval Office meeting in February. European allies sought to prevent a repeat by joining the talks and presenting a common stance on resisting Russian aggression.
Ahead of the meeting, Trump signaled a willingness to make concessions to Putin, suggesting Ukraine might have to forgo reclaiming Crimea and abandon its NATO aspirations.
Zelenskyy responded firmly, emphasizing that peace must be lasting and not repeat past failures, such as the 2014 annexation of Crimea, which ultimately fueled Russia’s broader invasion.
At the heart of the discussions was the proposal of NATO-style security guarantees for Ukraine—without granting formal membership. Trump’s team suggested the US and allies could commit to defending Ukraine if attacked again, a potential compromise that might appease both sides while avoiding full NATO expansion.
The talks were seen as a pivotal test for Zelenskyy, who faces pressure to engage in peace talks but refuses to cede control over the Donbas or other Ukrainian territory.
European leaders also pressed for continued military and diplomatic support, urging the U.S. not to push Ukraine into concessions that undermine its sovereignty.
The urgency of the meeting was heightened by fresh Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. For both Ukraine and its allies, the stakes in Washington were high: securing real peace without rewarding aggression. (PTI)
