Mumbai, Aug 19: Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has confirmed that Shubman Gill’s inclusion in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad does not guarantee him a spot in the playing XI.
The 25-year-old opener, who has also been named vice-captain for the tournament in the UAE, will have to compete for his place, Agarkar said on Monday.
Despite missing several recent white-ball matches due to scheduling overlaps with Tests and ODIs, Gill was recalled and handed the deputy’s role, replacing Axar Patel.
However, Agarkar stressed that the final XI would be decided by the team management based on conditions and balance.“Captain and coach will take the call on the best combination once we reach Dubai,” Agarkar explained. “Gill has been in great form over the last few months, but so have Sanju [Samson] and Abhishek [Sharma]. We are fortunate to have multiple good options, which is a healthy problem to have.”The selectors’ decision to include Gill, while leaving out Yashasvi Jaiswal from the main squad, has drawn attention. Agarkar admitted it was a tough call, pointing out Abhishek Sharma’s all-round ability as the deciding factor.
Gill, who last played a T20I in July 2024, now finds himself competing directly with Samson and Abhishek for an opening slot. With India beginning their campaign against the UAE on September 10, the management faces a welcome selection dilemma at the top of the order.
As India gears up for the Asia Cup, Gill’s presence adds depth and leadership to the squad, but his starting role will hinge on form, balance, and the team’s tactical needs. With competition for places at its peak, the coming weeks promise intriguing selection calls that could shape India’s run in the tournament. (IANS)
