SHILLONG, Aug 25: The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) has proposed recommending to the state government the construction of additional roads and by-lanes across Shillong to ease the city’s growing traffic congestion.
As part of this initiative, MSPB chairman Metbah Lyngdoh, accompanied by senior government officials and Rangbah Shnongs of Lumbatngen and Lapalang, inspected the road from Sawlad to Lapalang. The team also reviewed proposals for a bridge connecting Umpling Dong Sharum to MES, Nongrim Hills, as well as a road linking Bellefonte in Lumshyiap to Mawlai Mawroh.
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said traffic congestion remains one of the state’s biggest challenges, severely impacting the public.
He informed that the team inspected the Sawlad–Super Care–Lumbatngen-Lapalang route to assess the feasibility of widening the road, though this would require acquiring portions of defence land along with some private properties.
The MSPB team also inspected the road near the Assam Regimental Centre (ARC) gate. Lyngdoh emphasised that the success of these projects will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders.
“We will strongly recommend to the state government the need to construct new roads and widen existing ones to reduce traffic congestion in Shillong,” the MSPB chairman said.
