SHILLONG, Aug 28: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has identified around 345 villages in the state that remain either un-electrified or partially electrified, and plans to bring them under complete electrification by December 2026.
MeECL Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Sanjay Goyal said electrification is a continuous process, noting that since the 2011 Census, which formed the basis of the last major electrification drive, new villages and hamlets have emerged.
He added that several villages have also expanded or split into upper and lower habitations, leaving some areas without complete coverage.
According to MeECL records, these 345 villages require full saturation under ongoing electrification schemes. Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), sanctioned in two phases, work is already underway to reduce losses in the system, while the next phase will focus on covering households that remain without power.
Goyal added that an estimated 52,000 households in these villages are still awaiting electrification. “The tendering process is in progress, and work is expected to start soon. We plan to complete the project within 18 months, aiming for maximum coverage by December 2026,” he said.
