Shillong, Aug 31: The KHADC has directed the Elaka Department to address objections raised against the proposed allotment of land to the BSF by the Syiem of Hima Maharam in South West Khasi Hills.
The KSU-SWKHD filed a complaint with the KHADC, challenging the decision made by the Syiem of Hima Maharam to allot land to the BSF.
The KHADC Executive Committee stated that the KSU’s complaint indicates a possible violation of Section 9 of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Regulation & Administration of Land) Act, 2021, which states that no raid land within the district shall be allotted to any person without the prior permission of the Executive Committee.
The KSU-SWKHD had earlier urged KHADC Chief Executive Member Shemborlang Rynjah to intervene and halt the Hima’s plan to allot approximately 70 acres of agricultural land near the Mula River for the construction of a BSF unit headquarters.
Strong opposition has emerged from several quarters, with the KSU arguing that the land in question is vital to the livelihoods of hundreds of local Khasi farmers.
KSU-SWKHD president Forwardman Nongrem stated that they would not allow the land to be handed over to the BSF and gave the Syiem until September 2 to convene a Special Executive Dorbar and publicly withdraw the proposal.
He also criticised the Syiem for citing national security as justification for the land transfer.
