Chokpot, Sep 10: A conglomeration of civil society organisations (CSOs) from the Chokpot area of South Garo Hills have once again raised concerns over the allocation of coal mining block in the village of Paromgre in the district.
The concern comes after a meeting held between the various groups over various concerns being faced by residents of the area.
“One of the key points discussed was the issue of coal mining. Last year, information surfaced regarding proposed coal mining activities at Paromgre, Chokpot, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya. Despite our repeated submission of complaint letters to various government departments, no action has been taken to address our concerns. This persistent inaction has left us with no choice but to consider stronger measures,” said the CSOs in a statement.
The meeting also resolved that if coal mining operations are initiated without proper procedures and if the concerned authorities continue to neglect their responsibilities, the CSOs of Chokpot would be compelled to intervene directly. “We are prepared to visit the site and take immediate steps to halt any such unlawful activities,” they added.
Furthermore, the meeting also resolved to visit various government offices under the Chokpot area including the PWD, hospitals, and block offices to raise public concerns and advocate for improved services for the welfare of the local community.
