SHILLONG, Sep 25: Vehicular traffic along the Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road has remained at a complete standstill since Wednesday afternoon following a landslip triggered by blasting work carried out by Ace Construction, the firm implementing the Shillong-Dawki road project.
The incident occurred at Dainshyieng, between Laitlyngkot and Pomlum, where blasting was conducted to facilitate road expansion. The landslip brought down massive boulders and debris, extensively damaging the road and cutting off a vital route used daily by commuters and tourists.
Authorities immediately halted traffic to ensure public safety, while emergency workers and company staff rushed to the site to assess the situation. The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Pynursla has already enforced regulated timings for vehicles to ply on this stretch due to the ongoing two-lane road construction.
Assistant Public Relations Officer (APRO) of Ace Construction, Tes Khongkrom, said efforts are under way to restore traffic at the earliest. “Four machines are currently engaged in clearing the debris, but we are unable to deploy the loader at the moment. If there are no further landslips, we will try to partially reopen the road for vehicles from Thursday night,” he stated.
Khongkrom explained that blasting was unavoidable as the company needed to create sufficient space for heavy chain machines to climb the hillock. “We do not want the public and commuters to suffer, so we are trying our best to clear the road quickly,” he added.
Meanwhile, commuters have been advised to use alternative routes until the affected stretch is declared safe for travel.
