SHILLONG, Oct 14: The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), South West Khasi Hills unit, has urged Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to intervene and ensure the swift completion of the Block Institute of Education and Training (BIET) at Sakwang village in South West Khasi Hills.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister on Tuesday, FKJGP district unit president Keness June Nonglait appealed to him to personally take up the matter so that the long-delayed project could finally be completed.
Nonglait stated that the prolonged delay in constructing the BIET building has compelled trainee teachers from the district to travel to the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) at Nongstoin for their training.
He pointed out that the DIET at Nongstoin has been allocated only a limited number of seats for trainees from South West Khasi Hills, leaving many local candidates without opportunities.
He further noted that although South West Khasi Hills was declared a separate district in 2012, very little progress has been made in establishing essential educational infrastructure. The federation expressed disappointment that the district continues to lack vital institutions necessary for academic and professional growth.
According to Nonglait, this situation has hit students from economically weaker families the hardest, as many are unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints and the absence of adequate training facilities within the district.
The FKJGP has therefore urged the government to treat the BIET project as a priority and complete its construction at the earliest to ensure equal access to education and training opportunities for students and teachers from South West Khasi Hills.
