GUWAHATI, Oct. 16: The situation near Baksa district jail at Nikashi, where five key arrested accused in the Zubeen Garg’s death case are currently lodged, is stated to be under control on Thursday amid deployment of additional security forces and senior police officials assessing the area.
Police had to resort to lathi-charge and firing of tear gas shells on Wednesday afternoon to disperse an unruly mob that attacked a convoy transporting the accused persons to the newly-built prison.
Angry protesters, shouting slogans demanding justice for the late singer, set police and media vehicles ablaze and pelted stones at the convoy, as the situation turned from bad to worse with several policemen and mediapersons suffering injuries.
The volatile situation had prompted the district administration to impose Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in order to prohibit the assembly of five or more persons in the area.
According to reports, two persons have been arrested in connection with the volatile situation after several persons were identified and detained for their alleged involvement in the attack on the convoy.
Speaking to mediapersons on Thursday, inspector general of police Akhilesh Kumar Singh said the situation in the area was limping back to normal.
“Additional police personnel, including Rapid Action Force and paramilitary forces, have been deployed in the area. Situation is under control since morning, with shops and markets open and vehicles plying on roads. We have appealed to the residents to maintain peace and keep faith in the legal process,” Singh said.
However, Internet services have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order,” he said.
Meanwhile, two youths – Deepak Medhi and Bidyut Kalita – who were injured in police firing at Baksa and later taken to AIIMS Guwahati, are stated to be out of danger after undergoing treatment.
Assam minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass visited AIIMS on Thursday to inquire about their health.
“I also took updates from the doctors and medical staff regarding their latest health status. For the information of the people of Assam, both youths are now out of danger and recovering well. The chief minister has informed me that the Government of Assam will bear the entire cost of their treatment,” Dass stated on social media.
