WASHINGTON, Oct 18: US President Donald Trump reiterated that India will no longer buy oil from Russia, claiming New Delhi has “more or less stopped” and is “pulling back” from such purchases, which previously made up 38% of its imports.
Speaking during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Trump cited an assurance from Prime Minister Modi. India, however, responded by saying it is diversifying its energy sources based on market conditions.
Relations between India and the US remain strained after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods, partly over Russian oil imports. India called the move “unfair and unjustified.”
Trump also repeated his claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan, saying PM Shehbaz Sharif credited him with saving “millions of lives.” India maintains the ceasefire was the result of direct military talks following Operation Sindoor, launched after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
