TURA, Oct 24: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Tura, has strongly opposed the recent demand made by the Regional Council Demand Committee (RCDC) for the creation of a separate regional council within the Garo Hills region, asserting that it would not allow such a move and that “Garo Hills would remain an A’chik land for all generations to come.”
“The said demand, which was reportedly discussed during a meeting held on October 12, 2025, at Manikganj, North Garo Hills, seeks to include nearly 1,987 sq km of land spread across the districts of North, West, South and South West Garo Hills. AHAM views this move as unconstitutional, divisive and a direct challenge to the ancestral and constitutional rights of the A’chik (Garo) people,” it stated.
“The entire Garo Hills region is the ancestral homeland of the A’chik people, recognised under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, and is administered through the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). Hence, any attempt to create another administrative entity such as a Regional Council within the jurisdiction of GHADC is legally invalid and constitutionally impermissible,” added AHAM president, Georgeprice Ch. Momin.
Momin made it explicitly clear that the A’chik people would never allow any division, partition or encroachment of their ancestral lands under any circumstance.
“The Garo Hills belongs solely to the A’chiks. It is our ancestral domain—inherited from our forefathers and protected under the Constitution. No external group or committee has the authority to claim or carve out even an inch of our land. The so-called demand for a Regional Council within Garo Hills is unacceptable, unconstitutional and will be met with the united resistance of the A’chik nation,” he warned.
Momin further reminded that the A’chik people have coexisted peacefully with minority communities living within their lands, but that coexistence does not translate to ownership or claim over A’chik territory.
He described the RCDC’s proposal as a deliberate attempt to create disharmony and communal division among the peace-loving people of Garo Hills and urged the state government, Governor and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to immediately reject and disregard the RCDC’s proposal in its entirety.
“Allowing such divisive demands to persist will undermine the unity, peace and integrity of the Garo Hills region and the State of Meghalaya as a whole. Our message remains firm and clear—No Regional Council, No Compromise and No Surrender. The Garo Hills is A’chik land, and it shall remain A’chik land for all generations to come,” Momin asserted.
