SHILLONG, Oct 27: A joint operation conducted by Mawlai Police and the Special Operations Team (SOT) led to the arrest of five suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, from the ISBT junction at Mawlai Mawiong on Sunday.
The suspects, identified as Md. Fajid Bilul (47), Lelepa Begum (40), Musamat Jahana Khatoon (35), Md. Alamgir Mia (25), and Md. Imammul Hassan (18), were reportedly travelling towards Bangladesh through Shillong after arriving from Srinagar.
Acting on a tip-off, the police teams conducted a checking operation at the ISBT junction, during which they intercepted a tourist taxi (ML05 S 1358) carrying the five individuals.
Upon questioning, the suspects failed to produce valid travel documents or passports to justify their presence in India.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, said the five suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested and a criminal case has been taken up at Mawlai Police Station for further investigation.
The five were produced before a local court on Monday evening for necessary legal action.
